This session will explore the research base, tools, and practices teachers can use to tackle one of the most challenging and emotionally charged conversations in schools: grading practices. We will use Joel Feldman's book "Grading for Equity" as a guide. This session delves into how accurate, bias-resistant, and motivational grading practices can enhance learning, reduce grade inflation, lower failure rates, and foster stronger teacher-student relationships. It examines the historical origins of grading, originally designed to sort students and reinforce fixed mindsets about their potential—an approach still prevalent today. The session also covers research on motivation and equitable teaching, offering practical, fair grading strategies, real teacher examples, and solutions to common challenges.

1. Explore grading history: Understand how traditional grading systems have created inequities and limited student potential.
2. Learn the benefits of equitable grading: Discover how fair, bias-resistant grading can improve learning and strengthen teacher-student relationships.
3. Understand research on motivation and equity: Review key research on how equitable grading supports student motivation and fairness.
4. Develop practical grading strategies: Gain tools and examples for implementing equitable grading practices and overcoming common challenges.
5. Reflect on grading’s impact: Consider how grading shapes both student and teacher identities, encouraging a more thoughtful approach to assessment.
