When was the last time learning felt like an act of discovery for you? When was the last time learning felt like an act of discovery for your students? This session will take to task the "gradual release" model and ask teachers to interrogate their own practices to consider to what extent they are helping their students develop the critical skills necessary to become independent, lifelong learners. It will provide room for discussion and exploration as well as practical tools to help teachers plan in such a way that students engage in critical reflection to increase intrinsic motivation and own their own learning. By the end of the session, attendees will define and explain the purpose of critical reflection; understand the basic reasoning for and components of proficiency-based instruction; and plan for proficiency-based instruction using templates
