This session will explore the power of community-based history projects in enhancing student understanding of history and community identity. We will delve into how these projects can: Foster Historical Thinking: By connecting historical events and narratives to students' own lives and communities, we cultivate deeper understanding and appreciation for history's relevance. Develop Essential Skills: Students will engage in critical inquiry, research, and primary source analysis while developing valuable research, communication skills. Build Community Connections: Through research on the namesakes of local places and historical figures, students will gain a deeper understanding of their community's identity and connect with local history in a meaningful way. This session will equip secondary social studies teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to guide students through the process of developing and conducting a successful community-based research project.
